Sunday Sermon // Empowered..To Teach

The Great Commission // Empowered..to Teach

[Associate Pastor, Greg Miller, ECC Covington Campus]

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20 NLT)

Jesus gave us this mission..

  1. to GO..
  2. to MAKE disciples..
  3. to BAPTIZE..
  4. to TEACH.

Live Love – Speak Truth

People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.

  • Without love, I have nothing to offer.

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-3 NLT)

The only way to foster 'more love' is by spending time with Jesus. There is no strategy to becoming a more loving church..it simply boils down to spending time with Jesus. He fills us with love and then we can give it away.

His love THROUGH me = power to change the world.

  • Let your life speak.

Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. (Ephesians 4:14-16 NLT)

A life that preaches:

  • Grounding in the TruthWhy does the Enemy fight us SOOOO hard as we try to read the Bible, or start new disciplines around the Word? Because he knows how powerful the Word alive in us is. We must stay grounded in the Word to receive truth.
  • Sounding like LoveWe need to constantly remember that God is love. When we speak it should sound like love. We can get puffed up with truth and forget to respond in love.
  • Abounding with Christ – Many times we are surviving on spiritual fumes. And the only way to reach the world is with great energy and passion. That is something we can't fabricate. We must abide with Christ to receive that mind of strength, boldness and power.

Our Christ-like lives should earn us the opportunity to speak truth with others.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17 NLT)
