Sunday Sermon // Empowered..To Make

The Great Commission // Empowered..to Make

[Associate Pastor, Greg Miller, ECC Covington Campus]

Influence everyone..disciple someone.

Jesus approaches some regular guys. He asks them to follow him. They do. He begins doing miraculous acts. People take an interest in Jesus.

Jesus finally has to get away from the crowds to spend time with his Father and the disciples. He walks on water. He heals. He casts out demons. He teaches. He shows authority over everything on the planet.

Jesus enters Jerusalem but not like a king. He enters humbly on the back of a donkey. Then, all of the sudden, he is arrested. And crucified. It looked like everything was over. The disciples dejectedly scattered. Then he is resurrected. More excitement. And the disciples are ready to take on the world. But about 40 days later, Jesus gives his disciples, AND YOU AND ME, the great commission. He doesn't tell them that HE will change the world..Jesus tells them THEY will change the world..and he will EMPOWER them.

  • All disciples are disciplers.

If we have surrendered to Christ then we are disciples. And a disciple MUST disciple someone else. And we're ALL empowered to disciple others.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:9, 10 NIV)

  • I'm not offering perfection, but pursuit.

As a discipler, we can offer those who follow us a pursuit after Jesus. We don't want people to be just like us..we want them to be just like Jesus. And if we're moving toward Jesus together, then we can become more like him.

Many of us get caught up in believing that we aren't “good enough” or that we don't “know enough” to be used by God. The only qualifier is that we're following Jesus.

If you are saved and following Jesus, then you can influence others. You can be used by God.

The Word + the Holy Spirit = all we need to make a difference.

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:18, 19 NIV)

If you're not following Jesus then you will pass down religion, not Jesus.

  • Discipleship is a lifestyle.

Discipleship is not an initiative, or a program, or something on a to-do list. Discipleship is at the core of our DNA if we are a transformed follower of Jesus.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 NIV)

Our calling is to be a light that shines in a dark world. And if we collectively link arms and shine our light together, then we will influence and CHANGE our community.

Let's SHINE!

Bottom line:

Influence everyone..disciple someone.
