Sunday Sermon // How to BE with Our Father

How to BE? // How to be with our Father

[ECC Lead Pastor, Scott Moore, Covington Campus]

I am created to know and BE known by my Father.

A wise old sage asked me one time, “How are you?” And my response was, “Well, I'm going to the gym, I'm having good quiet times, I'm working on my marriage..” And the wise old fella stopped me and said, “I didn't ask you what you're doing? I asked you, how are YOU!?!” He went on to say that my problem was that I was a good HUMAN DOING, but not a good HUMAN BEING.

What defines us?

  • Work?
  • Income?
  • Success or failure?
  • Addictions?
  • Abuse?
  • What have we done?
  • What's been done to us?

When we introduce ourselves ar Celebrate Recovery, we DON'T say, “Hi, I'm Scott and I'm a co-dependent.” NO, we are NOT defined by our weakness. Rather we identify ourselves as a child of God and that we have struggles. Like this, “Hi, I'm Scott, a grateful believer in Jesus Christ, and I struggle with co-dependency.”

There's a Hebrew word 'Yada' which means 'being completely and intimately known.' And God wants to yada you. He wants to know us completely and intimately.

We don't have to DO anything for God to know us and be pleased with us. He wants us to BE in relationship with Him.

Relationships are critical to our being: relationship with God, with our spouse, with our kids, and with a few close friends.

I am created to know and BE known by my Father.

1. Our Father initiates it!

As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous— not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)

For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up. (John 6:44 NLT)

Our Father reaches out to US first. He longs for relationship with us, and he initiates it.

“To be loved by God is the highest relationship, the highest achievement, and the highest position in life.” -Henry Blackaby

2. Our Father celebrates it!

In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away! (Luke 15:7 NLT)

Prodigal Son

  • Son leaves his fathers house.
  • Son squanders his inheritance.
  • Son returns home to beg for a job.
  • And the father reinstates him, celebrates him by throwing him a party.

“But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began. (Luke 15:22-24 NLT)

3. Our Father enables us to Love Him back!

“The Lord your God will change your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love him with all your heart and soul and so you may live! (Deuteronomy 30:6 NLT)

I am created to know and BE known by my Father.
