23 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
Wow! These 4 verses culminate in the most profound truth in the entire bible in my personal opinion. To be honest, it’s a truth that is extremely hard for mere men to swallow, including me. Okay, let’s say you’re sitting there talking to Jesus and He tells you that unless you turn your back on everything you’ve ever known about the world, the world & life that you love, you will spend your eternity in hell. That means your infatuations in anything other than Him are over…Money, your jacked up truck, hobbies, relationships and even your hurts. That’s a kick in the stomach to “Man”. By the way I’m not suggesting that it’s wrong to have money, a jacked up truck, or relationships and we will all have hurts. But those things are to no longer to take precedent in your life …But the worst kick in the gut I think we get is the fact that this truth states that we’re no longer the ruler of ourselves. We have to give up the lordship our own lives. For inherently selfish beings that’s a hard concept to swallow. There is a “Churchy” term that we hear all the time: “Die to self”…That means to daily give up the rule of your own life to Jesus.
But in verses 35 & 36 Jesus refers to Himself as the light of the world. I know He’s telling His audience here that His days are numbered, but I think it’s important to understand the correlation between the truth stated above and the term “Light of the World”. Jesus is the “Light of the World”, period. To me that doesn’t mean He is just a beacon “calling us home”. His light sheds unmitigated truth. He wants us to look at the world through His light/His eyes. We can truly see the world for what it really is…a fallen, imperfect, deceitful place and not just that… but that truth also states that love, joy and peace are attainable through Him. What you’re gaining by giving up your life is being able to walk in the Truth. What you’re gaining in giving up your life is being able to reside in the presence of the Lord forever. The truth is… all we need is Jesus.
My prayer today is that you’re living in His light and know the truth.
