The Walk // 1 John 2
[ECC Associate Pastor, Greg Miller, Covington Campus]
I can't walk with God unless I know the truth.
And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. (1 John 2:3-6 NLT)
- Do you love His voice?
- Do you desperately want to know how to please him?
We've bought into a bunch of lies.
Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17 NLT)
- We are good at believing lies of others.
- We are good at lying to ourselves.
But, if I know the truth, the the truth will set me free.
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NLT)
Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth. (John 17:17 NLT)
So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. (John 8:36 NLT)
There is tremendous freedom in Christ.
But what we believe is important.
What I believe to be true about God should come from his Word.
Then the Truth will expose and push out the lies.
I WILL BE FREE if..
- If I remain faithful to what I know to be true. (the Word)
So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us. (1 John 2:24, 25 NLT)
- If I listen to the Spirit.
I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ. (1 John 2:26, 27 NLT)
If I know the truth, then the truth will set me free..and if I faithfully obey the truth, then I will walk closely with God.
“I'm just not being fed.” .. is an ignorant statement that shows I am not feeding myself. We must love the Word. We must long desperately for more truth. We have the Holy Spirit ALIVE in us. Listening and obeying the Holy Spirit will compel and drive us to the Word and to prayer.
The Sunday morning gathering (church service) is the icing..not the cake.
