Sunday Sermon // The Walk :: 1 John 1

The Walk // 1 John 1

[ECC Lead Pastor, Scott Moore, Covington Campus]

I can't walk with God and remain in darkness.

How do you know if you're following God?

  • You observe the rules..
  • You are religious..
  • You had an experience..

No..

Following Jesus means walking with Him.

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8 NLT)

If we are going to follow and walk with God..then it means we will change direction. Behavior is a result of a change in direction. We can't try and change our behavior/bad habits and NOT FIRST change our direction.

I can't walk with God and remain in darkness.

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. (1 John 1:5, 6 NLT)

John isn't saying that Christains don't sin. He is saying that IF we continue in our sin with NO CONVICTION then we may need to check ourselves because the Father convicts us of sin to grow us closeser to Him and even to display His forgiveness and grace. If there is no conviction then there may be no Holy Spirit residing in us. We may be deceived about our salvation.

Many believe two lies from the enemy:

  1. I am saved by my good works..
  2. I am saved so I can do whatever I want..

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)

What do I need to do?

Keep walking in the light.

But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7 NLT)

Stop flirting with darkness.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. (1 John 1:8-10 NLT)

If we say that we don't struggle with sin, or if we deny that sin is attractive..then we are calling God a liar.

I can't walk with God and remain in darkness.

Action Steps:

  • Renew your commitment to “walk with God.”
  • Repent of any dark areas that you have been tolerating.
  • Maybe for the first time, trust JESUS (not church, not knowledge, not a person) for your salvation.
