Cling and Give

How can you cling and give at the same time?

Kurt Petershiem, the Director of Students at Eastridge, had this to say on the topic of “cling and give” today when he challenged the staff with this email:

If you need some encouragement from the Word this morning, I just read this verse and found it to be a brilliant picture of ministry.

“…you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life–in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.” Philippians 2:15-16

I found the phrase “hold out” to have another meaning – “hold on to”.  The idea is that the “Word of life” is to be both clung to and given away in the life of the Christian.

Think of this like a runner with a baton. He must do everything in his power to hold on to that baton; for even a single drop could lose his team the race. Yet the purpose of his holding on to it, is that he may give it away to his teammate.

So it is in the life of a Christian – especially a minister.  We must cling to the Word that is life.  We must know it, use it, and apply it to ourselves SO THAT we may hand it off confidently to others. If that is not the reality of our lives we will only find that we are running in vain – with no purpose and nothing to give. We will have nothing to give because there is nothing in our hands. If we forsake the baton for a more “comfortable” run, we will, in the end have nothing to hand off to the next man.

Do you feel like you are clinging to the Word right now?

If not..start today..join us as we read one chapter a day and discuss it on our facebook page.

If you are clinging to the Word..are you ready to give it away, too?

I am challenged today..I hope you are too.
