uncanny coincidence or is that Jesus in my spaghetti?

Have you ever had those moments?..you know the ones where you’re thinking of a song and you turn on the radio and that song is playing..or your mind wanders off to an old school buddy and moments later he gives you call..or you open a can of British Jam and see the face of Jesus on the underside of the cap?

Well, I just had one of those moments..here’s the scene:

In the blog post Tullian Tchividjian inquires about what resources D.A. Carson would recommend to current church leaders. One of Carson’s choices is John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life.

Nothing uncanny really about that suggestion.

What was very strange was the timing of this perfect storm.

As I read those words, “Don’t Waste Your Life,” Adam Duritz of Counting Crows sang “don’t waste your life.” WHAT!?!

Seriously..at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME..”don’t waste your life”

I’m not wasting my life!?! Actually at this moment in time I’m even multitasking! Eating lunch, reading blogs, listening to the iPod, waiting on the babies to wake up from a nap and the laundry to dry. I’M NOT WASTING MY LIFE!……I mean, I’m not wasting my life, am I?

So I’ll try not to read too much into it all..but I’m sure I’ll be thinking all day long about whether or not I’m wasting my time..my life..

or maybe I’ll take Adam Duritz’s words to heart and “change, change, change.”

  • Are you wasting your life?
  • Are there things in your life that need to be changed to keep you from wasting away?

“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” -John F Kennedy

Must admit, I don’t get to read every post….but this one I loved. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve wondered where the time, the opportunities went…and how poorly I’ve spent so many of them. I’m so grateful we serve a God who says that every moment can be a new one….a new opportunity. I’ve only rarely come to that point where my thoughts and desires would be consistent with those of the Father….but it is in those moments that I have found the most peace, even when it was the most difficult place in which to find myself.

Thanks for sharing, Trey! God bless!

I read some Piper today. Scott Moore asked me today if I had ever read Don’t Waste Your Life, and I had not. I was able to find a free pdf online and read a couple chapters. My favorite thought up to this point is this, there is nothing new under the sun, only never-ending repackaging.

I do agree, a lot of people are very busy doing things that are necessary and important. However, busyness and Godliness are not the same. In fact, even Christian leaders are often guilty of doing things in God’s name for the sake of the gospel that are in the way of His highest and best.

I have found that a tension exists in almost every situation between our thoughts and His thoughts. It is only by true dependency on Hom that those thoughts are the same. It is only with this perspective that one can rest assured that they are not wasting their life. When we know what He wants, then we know what we should be doing.
