So who CAN I eat with????
Ok so this week’s ECC reading plan has been quite an eye-opener for me…from the beginning of the week in Psalms about the power, safety and salvation in the Word to the latter part of the week’s passages in 1 Corinthians about unity, purity and honor.
But the section of scripture that has sparked my interest and caused me to dig a little deeper is by far 1 Corinthians 5:9-11.
9I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. (NIV)
WOW!?!
I could certainly use some help on this one Facebook friends. I understand Paul to be saying that we (Christians) should not associate ourselves with “brothers” (fellow believers) who are blatantly sinning.
This is such a hard verse…because I feel like I’m the chief of sinners most of the time…and I don’t like to eat by myself!!!
Again this is a very strong message to me this week and has led me down a path of discovery about the topic of Judgment vs. Rebuke…and led me to the natural next question, “Who am I to judge anyway?” (more on this topic in my next note…coming soon after I read some of your responses to the abovementioned section of scripture…)
