Ramblings on Love…safe for guys to read too!

How do you show Love?kiss on the steps

Do you connect Emotionally with your true love?
Do you connect Physically with the one you love?
Do you connect Spiritually with your loved one?
Do you connect Intellectually with the one you love?

The answer, of course, is yes to all of these. The recipient of our love and affection, our deepest devotion, our undying commitment should feel connected to us in the ways mentioned above. And in every relationship where love is present I would assume each connection would be present but with varying degrees. The physical love I demonstrate with my wife varies a great deal from the hugs and kisses I give my children. The emotional connection a son has with his mother and father is vastly different from the emotional connection he may have with his closest buddies.

My pastor, Scott Moore, was teaching this Sunday about Uncommon Surrender and how our church shows love. The much-more-than-a-motto-or-slogan-but-a-way-of-life of our church is: Love God, Love People and Serve Others. And this way-of-life was born out of a passage in Matthew where Jesus is asked the question, “What is the greatest commandment?” (see scripture references below).

Loving God with all my Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength!?! As I try to figure out what that looks like in my life…and how I can partner with my church family in showing love, I came up with this somewhat mathematical equation. I used the nouns from both the NIV (which are the same words as the NASB and King James) and The Message (my favorite paraphrase out today.) I also added the word strength from Luke’s version of the story. Check it out and see if it makes sense to you.

Showing Love:

Worshiping demonstrates my EMOTIONAL connection to God.
[Love God with all your heart (NIV) / passion (MSG)]

Praying demonstrates my SPIRITUAL connection to God.
[Love God with all your soul/prayer]

Reading/Studying Bible demonstrates my INTELLECTUAL connection to God.
[Love God with all your mind/intelligence]

Fasting demonstrates my PHYSICAL connection to God.
[Love God with all your strength/muscle]

There is so much more to explain and so many more examples to develop and support these ramblings. Maybe I’ll write a book. Or maybe it’s already been written. Check out God Speaks Your Love Language: How to Feel and Reflect God’s Love by Gary Chapman. That may touch on it some…but if not…then maybe I’ll set aside some TIME this year for such an adventure. Ok…maybe next year…or the next…

I’d love to hear your comments on this….

Matthew 22 (NASB)

36″Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
37And He said to him, ” ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’
38″This is the great and foremost commandment.
39″The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’
40″On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 22 (The Message)
36One of their religion scholars spoke for them, posing a question they hoped would show him up: “Teacher, which command in God’s Law is the most important?”
37 -40Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.”
